Robinson Donovan employees teamed with formerly homeless women veterans on May 30th to create a vegetable garden at the Soldier On shelter in Leeds. A group of 11 people from Robinson Donovan joined with Soldier On staff and five formerly homeless veterans to plant the new garden and socialize. The garden is being planted on property leased by the private, non-profit organization Soldier On at the Veterans Administration site in the city.
The garden team-up grew from a desire by Robinson Donovan staff to become more personally involved with the veterans served by Soldier On. The firm has been involved with Soldier On, which provides housing, treatment, education and training to homeless veterans, since 2008. Robinson Donovan provides support for the organization’s marketing/public relations efforts as well as pro-bono legal services. Moved by the work Soldier On does, and by the growing number of women veterans who are becoming homeless, however, staff wanted to find a way to help veterans directly.
“We wanted to show these veterans that we appreciate what they’ve done for our country,” said Karen Gravelin, Robinson-Donovan’s chief operating officer. “When we found out that the women there wanted to create a vegetable garden, we saw that as an opportunity to jump in and, if you will, get our hands dirty.”
“This is something we’re really looking forward to doing,” Gravelin said of the weekend project. “We’re going to start with gardening and then move on to a cookout-potluck kind of thing. We’re bringing burgers and dogs; everyone from Robinson Donovan who’s going is bringing something. So we’ll be working with the veterans and then taking some time to really get to know them. It’s exciting.”
The Robinson Donovan group will include Gravelin; attorney Jeff Trapani; summer intern John Rosato; paralegals Linda Girotti, JoAnne Gebski, Kathy Weller and Sue Graney; legal assistants MiMi Wielgosz and Kim Foster; and receptionist Reine Roche.
